Perlato Royal - Transformation

The skills of our expert employees and the level of experience matured in forty years of activity in this field, allow the Vitti Group to carry out their processing with extreme precision.  Perlato Royal, extracted in large blocks and subject to initial controls in the quarry subsequently undergo quality controls in every phase.  The first processing phase that a block of Coreno stone is subject to is its separation into slabs, an operation that is performed in our own laboratories.  The technologies used and the level of experience and professionalism of our workers are also extremely important factors in the field of processing.

Two different industrial reference points exist in the field of stone processing:

- traditional activities that begin with the production cycle from multi-blade frames (for the production of very large semiprocessed slabs);

- recent activities that begin with the production cycle of block cutters (for processing of small and uniform blocks)

This type of activity has been developed throughout the last 30 years as it allows for the creation of small modular formats for floors and finishes, very advantageous from an economic point of view.

In particular:

-for the production of very large semiprocessed slabs, traditional frames with steel diamond blades;

-for the production of products of a fixed dimension on an industrial level (tiles) from small, good quality or even cracked blocks, the production phase includes two steps.  The initial cutting of the block to create semiprocessed slabs of a reduced height using a block cutter with orthogonal disks.

A second phase in which production begins through the use of ongoing production lines of very thing tiles.

The material transformed into slabs is therefore subject to further processing phases using operating machines.  Apart from constant technological work of the machines used for sanding, polishing, milling, edging etc. traditionally used for decades, there is an increase in the use of this stone with rustic surfaces, increasing the trend towards mechanical processes and automation of these superficial finishes that, up until a short time ago, were characterised by manual processing of a very low level and at a very high cost.

SPECIAL FINISHES

The methods of superficial finishes consist in several specific operations that allow the designer to intervene in terms of the aesthetic characteristics of the material.  Every processing phase corresponds to a different result in terms of appearance, given by light and the colours that undertake different shades and tones according to the basic colour of the material and the type of superficial finish applied.  Some processing phases also affect the performance of the product: its mecahnical resistance, external agents and acoustic insulation.

The most common finishes that raw slabs are subjected to are:

- honing, that smoothes and lightens the colour, providing the material with a matt finish and a smooth and flat finish.  The slab remains matt and therefore becomes anti-slip and can be used for internal finishes especially for floors and staircases that must satisfy specific safety requirements;

- polishing, allowing for the creation of a surface with a very high level of planarity, it enhances the colour and brings out the very best in terms of intensity and brightness, making the material much more resistant to atmospheric agents as the polishing action closes the pores of the stone.  About half way through processing, if necessary, the holes are filled and any other imperfections are removed.  As Perlato Royal Coreno is a stone consisting up hard and semi-hard minerals (a compact limestone), it is extremely bright and this characteristic remains in time;

- bush hammering, it creates a coarse surface with a colour that is very similar to the natural raw material.  In can be created in several forms, with a large grain and with a small grain,including all intermediate grains.  The surface is therefore slipproof and perfect for use in external floors;

- sanding, with a superficial incision allowing for the insertion of words and drawings using a get of high pressure silica sand.  It is used for cleaning and maintenance of stones but intensity is very important as it may make the material vulnerable to aggression by atmospheric agents.
